Repair Is A Skill, Not A Feeling
4 min read · INTYMA Editorial
What repair actually is
Repair is not an apology tour or a grand romantic gesture. It is the small set of moves that follow a rupture and tell both people that the connection is still there.
The four moves
- Stop the escalation. End the exchange before it becomes a contest.
- Return. Come back — not to re-argue, but to re-establish contact, even briefly.
- Name your part. One sentence about what you did, without the word "but".
- Ask what would help now. Not what would fix everything. What would help now.
Timing matters more than eloquence
Most repair attempts fail because they arrive too late or too fast. Coming back too fast reads as impatience; coming back days later reads as indifference. In between is the useful window.
Repair can be learned
If none of this was modelled for you growing up, the moves can still be learned. They are not personality traits. They are behaviours, and behaviours can be practised.
